A Guide to Nepalese Food: Momo, Sekuwa and Himalayan Curries
First time with Nepalese food? Here's what momo, sekuwa and Himalayan curries actually are, the spices behind them, and how a Nepalese pub kitchen differs from a curry house.

What is Nepalese food?
Nepalese cooking sits between the food of the Himalayas and the kitchens of South Asia. It leans on fresh herbs, house-ground spice blends and slow-cooked meat on the bone — generally gentler and more aromatic than a heavy curry house, and built around sharing. At The Queen Elizabeth it's cooked by a Nepalese-led kitchen and served alongside British pub classics, so a mixed table never has to choose.
The flavour comes from our Himalayan House Blend — house-ground timur (Nepalese pepper), akabare chilli, jimbu and mustard — and every curry is Spice-to-Order, so you set the heat from gentle to akabare-hot.
The words on the menu
A short Nepalese food glossary
The dishes and ingredients worth knowing before you order.
- Momo
- Steamed or fried Nepalese dumplings filled with spiced vegetables or meat, served with a dipping sauce. Nepal's best-loved street food.
- Sekuwa
- Marinated meat char-grilled over flame — a Himalayan barbecue style that carries smoke and spice.
- Khasi Ko Masu
- A traditional Nepalese goat curry, slow-cooked on the bone for a deep, savoury gravy.
- Tarkari
- A Nepalese vegetable curry — the everyday side that anchors a Nepalese plate.
- Timur
- Nepalese pepper, related to Sichuan pepper, with a citrusy, tongue-tingling note you won't find in standard curry powder.
- Jimbu
- A dried Himalayan herb used to season daal and curries, with a mild onion-and-garlic character.
- Akabare
- A small, fiery round Nepalese chilli — the source of the proper heat in our hotter dishes.
How it differs
A Nepalese pub kitchen vs a typical curry house
Both are delicious — they're just built differently. Here's the honest at-a-glance.
| Our Nepalese kitchen | A typical curry house | |
|---|---|---|
| Spice base | Timur, jimbu, akabare and mustard, ground in-house | Often a shared, pre-blended curry-powder base |
| Signature dishes | Momo, sekuwa and Himalayan curries | Balti, madras, korma and similar |
| Cooking | Fresh herbs, slow-cooked meat on the bone | Faster service from prepared base gravies |
| Heat | Spice-to-Order — set to your taste | Fixed per named dish |
